Film Research || 'Ruin' and 'The Book of Eli'

After my research on dystopian sci-fi films, I came to the conclusion that the two film openings that I liked the most out of my dystopian collection throughout my research were 'Ruin' and 'The Book of Eli'.

Ruin
I like the opening to 'Ruin' because it sets the time and place where the short-film is set.  I also like the limited amount of sound which emphasises the mystery of who the main character is and what he is actually doing. The sudden movements and entrance of the ruined helicopter forces the audience to pay attention.

The Book Of Eli
I like the opening to 'The Book Of Eli' as it emphasises what the world would be like after an apocalypse. The use of the desert sort of terrain exaggerates how lonely and the main character's desire for solitude. I also like how when the hijackers arrive they are like a small group that have been forced to live like that by the world that they have grown accustomed to. I find these two techniques combined make the film very effective. I also love the lighting in this clip. The way the sky is a sandy grey and all dull has a huge effect on the mood of this clip. The lighting is also effective when Eli goes underneath the ruined bridge and it goes completely dark apart from the light at the end of tunnel. I think this is effective as the battle is hidden and secretive. Afterwards all you see is Eli's shadow as the victor which exaggerated his power over the - now dead - hijackers and makes the audience want to know what he is ultimately after.
