Creating a short-film opening...

Once we finished our Preliminary Task, we were told to think about our main task which is:

to create a short-film opening that must last for one-two minutes

We were told to decide on a genre for our film opening and I came to the conclusion that I would like to attempt to do a sci-fi film opening, however I would like to focus on the dystopian section of the sci-fi genre.

A dystopia is a place where everything is unpleasant or environmentally degraded (e.g. a post-apocalyptic world) and is typically controlled by a totalitarian government that monitor every aspect of society's lives both public and private.

I chose sci-fi dystopias because most of my favourite films and TV shows are dystopian themed, such as:

The Maze Runner | The 100 | Humans | V for Vendetta | The Scorch Trials
(all of these are excellent and I recommend you watch them)

Somehow the idea of being thrown into a radioactive world (The 100) or scientists trying to find a cure for some futuristic disease and testing those who are immune (The Maze Runner Series) appealed to me. It is definitely what has inspired me to attempt to make a film opening with this genre.

Whilst deciding this I couldn't help but notice that this would be a challenge - but it wouldn't be fun otherwise! I have watched director's commentaries etc. on the DVDs of my favourite films and TV shows, so hopefully I can use their advice. One of the directors who truly inspires me is Wes Ball (director of the Maze Runner). He was a first time director when he did 'The Maze Runner' and has worked in a wide variety of positions in the film industry. His main background is in CGI and he made a short-film called the Ruin (which is below). This too is set in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic version of Earth.
